Why more leave days were deducted than you asked for

Updated September 17, 2026

This is normal, and there are three usual causes. Check them in this order.

1. Weekends may count

Whether weekends count toward leave duration is an organization-wide setting. Where it is switched on, a Friday-to-Monday request deducts four days rather than two.

2. Public holidays may count

The same setting exists separately for holidays. A week containing a public holiday can therefore cost a day more than you expected.

3. The day type on each end

A request left as Full Day at both ends deducts a whole day at each end, even if you only meant to take half. Open the request in Apply Leave and check the start and end day types first — this is the one you can fix yourself.

If the dates and day types look right

Then the weekend or holiday setting is the cause. It lives in your organization's leave policy, and an HR administrator can confirm which way it is set and adjust the request.

The leave policy, where Count holidays and Count weekends decide whether those days come out of your balance

If your balance was not enough

What happens then is also a policy choice. Your organization will have picked one of three: the request is rejected, it is allowed as loss of pay, or it is partially approved. Your HR administrator can tell you which applies.
